On The Verge
In this black & white photograph from the 1940's, two sisters read a newspaper in a semi-urban backyard. The younger sister sits in a kitchen chair, pretending to read the comic pages while peering carefully over the top of the paper with one eye, directly into the lens of the camera. Her older sister stands behind her, straddling the verge, reading over her sister's shoulder or perhaps avoiding the attention of the photographer. The younger sister, seated, will soon be married to the photographer; whether this is known to her at the time the picture was taken is unclear. They will have three children and while an unharmonious couple they will will remain together for the rest of their lives. Her sister will never marry, and will outlive her by several years.
